Joseph “Jack” Sherwood Hickernell, 92, passed away in the morning hours of Saturday, July 15, 2017, at home surrounded by family in the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown. Born April 10, 1925, in Newmanstown, he was son of the late Cyrus D. and Maude (nee’ Pannebecker) Hickernell. Jack was the husband of the late Carolyn Jane Ney, who died August 24, 1995. A veteran of the Army, he served in WWII as a surgical technician with the 392nd Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion in the Pacific Theater of Operations.  After returning from the war, Jack became a federal bank examiner and later owned his own real estate business covering Lebanon and Berks counties. Memberships include: Elias United Church of Christ, Newmanstown; Williamson Lodge #307, F&AM, Womelsdorf; Conrad Weiser Chapter #449 OES, Womelsdorf; Rajah Shrines; Reading Consistory; Tall Cedars of Lebanon; Knights Templar; Howard Lodge AF&AM, South Yarmouth, MA;  and, Aleppo Shriners, Wilmington, MA. Jack is survived by his children: Connie R. Hickernell, Millersville, and Cathy H. Pastva and her husband Gary of Cape Cod, MA.  He is also survived by his niece, Barbara D. Jacobson of Plant City, FL; nephew, David J. Landis, Sr. of Ocean Pines, MD; and, niece, Rebecca Wixon-Stoyer of Shillington; and many cousins. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 22, 2017, 11:00 AM, at the Elias UCC Church, 9 North Sheridan Road, Newmanstown, PA  17073, with Pastor Jay Heberling, officiating.  Burial will follow in Millcreek Memorial Cemetery, Newmanstown.  Relatives and friends may call Saturday from 9:45 AM to 10:45 AM at the church.  Masonic services by Williamson Lodge #307 F&AM at 10:45 AM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elias Church at the above address.
