Sara (Sally) C. (McCahan) Gibson died on September 2nd, 2017 from complications caused by Alzheimer’s disease. She was surrounded by her family and friends. Sally was born in September of 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland to William J. McCahan, Sr., and Beatrice Burgdorf McCahan of Havertown. Also deceased is her sister Carol Johanna McCahan. She attended Haverford High School and was a graduate of West Chester University and Kutztown University. Sally’s parents were caring and committed educators, and raised their children emphasizing the value of learning, so she too, chose this as her vocation. Her curiosity, thirst for knowledge, love of people, combined with her passion for reading and writing made her a natural teacher. These qualities resulted in a career that impacted many lives. In addition to being a teacher for 25 years primarily in the Conrad Weiser School district, Sally was also an instructor in the Pennsylvania Writing Project. Other professional activities included instructing classes on creative writing at the Yocum Institute for Arts Education and serving as secretary to the local education association. As a writer Sally published poetry and had an article in Redbook magazine. Even into her 50’s, Sally exhibited an adventurous spirit, bicycling 40 miles through the five-boroughs of New York City, peddling alongside several of her teaching colleagues. During the summer, she regularly camped with her family on Assateague Island in Maryland and spent time with friends in Cape May, New Jersey. Sally played an active role in her community, working on Womelsdorf’s bicentennial yearbook, serving on the town’s library board and initiating a story hour program for children at the United Church of Christ in Womelsdorf. Truly, Sally’s greatest love and the full measure of her devotion was to her family, and in particular, her three children, Eric, Emily, and Sara. She instilled in them the love of reading, the beauty of art, and the importance of being passionate about life. Despite the relentless toll of Alzheimer’s, Sally’s warm smile still managed to brighten the lives of those around her. Even while memory loss challenged her ability to deal with the tasks of daily living, Sally prolifically engaged in creating works of art. In recent years, she was cared for and comforted by the compassionate staff of Chestnut Knoll Memory Care facility in Boyertown. She was deeply loved by her family. Sally is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charlie Gibson, her three children, Eric, Emily and Sara, her four grandchildren, Leia, Ella, Bodhi, and Huxley, and her dear friend and brother, William McCahan. Services will be held Saturday, September 9th, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. at Mull Funeral Home, 27 East High Street., Womelsdorf, with Pastor Melissa A. Burkhart, officiating. Relatives and friends may call from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private in Womelsdorf Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
